Bennelong
Historians appear to be in some disagreement regarding Bennelong's end. The traditional belief is that he was rejected by both the whites and his Indigenous brethren, and died in 1813 as a drunken alcoholic. Recently, however, it has been suggested that he was not rejected by his people, and that he was a respected elder who played a major role in paybacks and the like. We are yet to be convinced by the latter belief, as the evidence of his rejection and his drunken violence is quite strong. Nonetheless, we are not in a position to come down on either side with any great weight.
