Vern's crappy stockade
Let's go back to the stockade itself. Sadly for the miners, it was apparently designed by Vern, who held himself out as an expert in such matters. To call it a stockade is somewhat of a misnomer. It was constructed out of overturned carts, probably pinched off some poor bugger who depended on them for his livelihood, and lumps of timber which were being prepared for use in the mines. Apparently the structure leaned outwards to make it difficult for horse soldiers to jump. Whacky do. It didn't stop the foot soldiers.
It seems it might have been better if, rather than marching all over the place, the rebels had been constructing a proper stockade. But it really seems as though Lalor mightn't have expected an attack at all, or if one was to occur it would be some distance off in time and/or place. For an Irish person to fall for that old con job is far beyond belief.
