From convicts to magistrates
Macquarie appointed two "emancipists" (freed convicts) to be turnpike commissioners with D'Arcy, and raised them to be magistrates as well, where occasionally they had to deliver justice on people for whom they had previously worked. Or, put another way, people by whom they were formerly enslaved. You can imagine how this appealed to Sydney's bunyip aristocracy.
But wait! That wasn't all.
