Move to Oskamull
While Lachie probably wasn't born in Oskamull, around 1772, when he was about ten, his dad decided to chuck in fishing, carpentry, or milling, or whatever it was he did on Ulva, and leased land from the Duke of Argyle at Oskamull to become ... well ... a crofter, that's a very small-time tenant farmer.
Lacking the funds to stock the property himself, Lachlan's dad shared it with two other tenants, and even shared his own bit with his son-in-law, who was apparently a tradesman of some sort. Probably not a television repairer. It's unknown when old man Macquarie died, but Lachlan bought a headstone for him in 1785.
