More India, and More Marriage
Macquarie spent two cheerless years in India. Well, cheerless except for the prodigious quantities of booze he was putting away. To such an extent that the army's paymaster objected to having to pay his booze bills. Doubtless he continued treatment for his dose of clap. And maybe spread it around a bit.
Upon his return, Lachlan joined up with Elizabeth, who was working in perfidious Albion, and Elizabeth, who one suspects was in for a rude surprise upon reaching the marriage bed and observing Lachlan's diseased matrimonial instrument, were wed. That's a conversation we wouldn't mind going back in time to observe. "Ah, yes, dear, ulcers like that are quite common amongst men, you know. It's our burden, like women and childbirth. For some reason, considering his past, upon his return Lachlan was appointed to be in charge of the Black Watch, a Scottish regiment of some savage renown, particularly in bar-room brawls. And thank goodness for Australia he was. Perhaps the English nabobs in charge of the army thought the savage Scots and the crooked Scot deserved one another. Lachlan was made a Lieutenant Colonel.
